Review: 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE Sedan

This practical, stylish, and economical compact car receives an upgrade package and remains one of the world's top-selling vehicles.

Toyota recently sold the 50-millionth Corolla, thus marking a remarkable milestone in overall automotive history. Now in its 12th generation after more than 55 years in production, this practical, stylish, and economical compact car remains one of the world's top-selling vehicles. Additionally, the high-efficiency 2022 Corolla Hybrid utilizes the latest Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive to achieve at least 50 mpg combined fuel economy making it the most fuel-efficient model to ever wear the Corolla name. By pairing a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with two motor/generators, the combined 121-horsepower system output meets reasonable performance expectations.

New for 2022

A premium interior package for the Corolla LE grade is a highlight of the new model year, as the upgrade option is comprised of full SofTex®-trimmed seats, heated front seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel, and power driver seat with lumbar support. Additional significant improvements include a standard eight-inch touchscreen with Wi-Fi Connect trial along with Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto compatibility. For all grades, new exterior colors of Ruby Flare Pearl and Wind Chill Pearl may be selected for LE, XLE, SE, XSE and Hybrid LE.

Safety is Standard

All 2022 Corolla models are equipped as standard with Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0. This advanced suite of integrated active safety features includes a pre-collision system designed to automatically activate the brakes to help avoid or mitigate collision force, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control for highway use, lane departure alert which provides steering assistance when necessary, lane tracing assist to help the driver keep the vehicle in its lane, automatic high beam that automatically switches between high and low illumination as appropriate, and road sign assist designed to recognize and display certain road signs to help assist the driver.

The Corolla has been making memories and stories for nearly three generations of customers. That adds up to billions of first jobs, first dates, daily commutes, graduations, vacations, doctor appointments, weddings, kids' ballgames ... all the meaningful events that make a life.

In the News

Source: Toyota | The Corolla Hybrid's linear acceleration response may take some by surprise. When pulling away, the battery provides a subtle power boost in order to put less strain on the engine and eliminate the rubber band effect experienced with some hybrids. A preload differential adds to the confident acceleration feel. During low loads and low differential rotation, differential-limited torque is distributed to the left and right wheels, yielding excellent handling stability. At mid-range and high engine loads, the preload differential functions as an open differential. Corolla Hybrid has EV mode, which allows the vehicle to be operated as a pure electric vehicle for short distances, depending upon certain conditions, such as battery charge level. This mode is useful for operating the vehicle in parking lots or indoor parking garages, for example. The Vehicle Proximity Notification feature alerts pedestrians of the vehicle's presence when running in battery mode. Along with the expected NORMAL and ECO drive modes, a POWER drive mode setting allows for an increase in power for stronger acceleration response when desired. NORMAL mode allows the hybrid system to achieve an ideal combination of fuel economy and vehicle acceleration. The accelerator opening amount changes linearly in response to accelerator pedal operation. ECO mode improves hybrid system efficiency by limiting power in response to light to moderate accelerator pedal input. POWER mode [increases power] allowing for improved acceleration response.
