Review: RAM 2500 HD Rebel: Production Off-Road Truck

This week's press loan is the all-new RAM 2500 HD Rebel. This bad boy was designed for that off-road adventurer who is looking to go from purchase to a summer of fun traversing any all off-grid trails they can find, instead of dealer lot to the off-road fitter to spend another $5,000 to $10,000 to build their ultimate off-road vehicle.

I'm not slighting those shops at all, they are great for the 20-30% of off-roaders who know what they want next for their off-road vehicle or the time to wait for it. This truck is designed for the person who is looking for an off-road ready truck so they can hit the off-grid camping bucket list or join an off-road club for a weekend or yearly run. This truck provides that convenience for off-road novices or even next-level drivers with limited time to wait on the truck upgrade.

Off the dealer lot, this truck provides a unique off-road suspension, a rear limited-slip differential and rear electronic locker, 33-inch off-road tires, and skid plates that protect the fuel tank and transfer case. And if you purchase the Hemi engine instead of the Cummins engine you can also add a front-mounted WARN Zeon-12 winch that is rated at 12,000 lbs.

No electric charging woes with this truck, you can buy it with either the Hemi gas or the Cummins turbo diesel engine, so refueling can be done in any off-grid town, highway, or interstate. For my week I had the best-in-class gas-powered 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that produces 410 hp and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. But wait there is more; this Hemi engine will also provide great gas mileage with the variable-valve timing (VVT) and Fuel Saver Technology cylinder deactivation system. This little technology magic bullet converts long trips in any RAM or Dodge Hemi beast into a mild-mannered fuel saver.

I'm always a big fan of any Rebel badging throughout the RAM line. It gives the truck a bold and adventurous look that says you are a great explorer looking for your next great adventure and not Do you know where the grocery store is located? The Rebel's rugged exterior styling will be similar to the Power Wagon with unique 2500 Heavy Duty and Rebel badging throughout and a sport performance hood from Mopar that helps with the menacing adventurer look.

Once you 'hop' into the 2500 you will still find a spacious and well-appointed cabin that provides exceptional comfort and convenience that features executive-looking premium black leather seats with white stitching and Rebel badging. There is also a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a leather-wrapped center console that is large enough to house a portable gun safe. It also has a Rebel logo prominently displayed on the top as well.

There is a large touchscreen display that provides access to a range of advanced features, including a premium sound system, satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. The model offers a design that ranges from running all over Texas climbing whatever came your way by day and then in the evening going to a red carpet charity event.

As I drove the 2500, I found the overall ride was nothing like other heavy-duty trucks, which can make you feel like you are in a lumber wagon until you add some weight. And turning capability, especially in tight parking lots was very similar to a RAM 1500. The reason for this 1500 ride in a 2500 HD is an exclusive five-link coil suspension that provides segment-leading best ride quality, handling, load-carrying characteristics, and articulation whether the truck is loaded or unloaded. Also available from the dealer is a rear air suspension system that further enhances best-in-class ride and handling qualities.
