Review: 2021 INFINITI Q60S

The Q60 sports coupe is tastefully understated, but you better have your seat belts pulled tight because it will take you for a ride.

The Infiniti Q60 is a 2 door sport luxury coupe manufactured by Nissan Motor Company's luxury group automaker INFINITI. It was originally badged as the INFINITI G37, but received its current Q60 moniker in 2014 when the then Nissan president Johan de Nysschen cited the need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio. Though the athletic looking Q60 with its sports-coupe attitude has not had a major facelift or body update since its gen two update in 2016, that only reinforces how far ahead of the curve the Q60 is with it's drag coefficient of 0.28 and zero front and rear aerodynamic lift. I noticed that perfect balance pretty quickly when I was rounding one of the tall Dallas inner-city overpasses, but it really was noticeable when I had it on a couple back county roads that had numerous elevation changes and sweeping high speed turns. It was impressive. New for 2021 INFINITI will add more standard safety features than ever before and more grade levels to give car buyers more options that appeal to their discerning tastes. The three grades that are offered for 2021 will be PURE, LUXE, and RED SPORT 400. Standard features for all three grades includes:

Powertrain

No matter which package grade you choose, all three trim levels will be powered by the same award-winning VR-series, twin-turbo 3.0L V-6. The only difference will be the horsepower produced depending on the grade level. All grades also will come with the same seven-speed automatic transmission that has a manual shift mode, Downshift Rev Matching system that creates the most amazing exhaust tone and when in Sport mode, a system that holds gears longer for optimum performance in corners.

Interior Technology and Sound

All three Q60 models will offer a unique feature that you will not find in any other sports coupe that I'm aware of. There is an 8” upper touch screen and a 7” lower touch-screen display placed perfectly in the center stack area. I didn't realize how convenient it was to have both the navigation screen and any other app you would like up at the same time while on a road trip. If you have ever driven a sports car or coupe for length of time, you know how road noise will affect the comfort of your drive. A really nice feature that is standard on all three packages is the advanced Active Noise Cancellation system that will quiet ambient noise inside the cabin with phase-shifting technology to neutralize and quiet harsh frequencies. And if the ANC can't cancel all the ambient white noise, I'm sure the 13 speaker Bose® Performance Series Audio system and Bose® Centerpoint® surround sound system that simulates a live concert sound will do the trick. There may be days you go to the lake and sit outside your car just because you want to listen to your favorite music.

Safety

INFINITI's comprehensive suite of advanced safety systems, INFINITI Safety Shield®, offers configurable assistance to help protect driver and passengers. The active and passive safety and convenience features include available Around View® Monitor, Intelligent Cruise Control and Distance Control Assist, Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Prevention, Blind Spot Intervention® and Backup Collision Intervention. Newly standard on all models for 2021 is Automatic Collision Notification with Emergency Call.

My press loan vehicle for the week was the RED SPORT 400 grade, which is the pinnacle of performance for all INFINITI vehicles throughout the fleet. The powertrain for the Q60 Red Sport is the VR-series 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 400 horsepower and a very respectable 350 pound-feet of torque. To create peak performance and efficiency there is a water-cooled intercooler to efficiently and quickly chill air entering the system for better throttle response and increased fuel economy. It will had 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels that are staggered on the rear wheel drive models, upgraded sport brakes with red calipers and Dynamic Digital Suspension. There is also a safety upgrade with the ProACTIVE package for 2021 offers Direct Adaptive Steering, Lane Departure Prevention with Active Lane Control, Adaptive Lighting with High Beam Assist, and more.

2021 INFINITI Q60S

I drive a lot of vehicles each year, but this was my first drive of the INFINITI Q60, so when it showed up, I was a bit underwhelmed. After driving it for a few days and then taking it out on the highway and interstate to let it run and breath, I quickly realized how wrong I was about this car. And the way it sounds when you open it up, there are only two other times I've enjoyed playing with the header tones, one was a well known big block V-8 and the other was a famous euro 4 cylinder with a patented F-1 designed header system. When asked about the coupe, I will say this sports-coupe is tastefully understated, but don't make it mad because if you do, you better have your seatbelts pulled tight because you are going for a ride.
